Euphorbia abyssinica, commonly called the Desert Candle or Candelabra Spurge, is a striking tree-like succulent that resembles a cactus but belongs to the Euphorbiaceae family. Native to Ethiopia, Somalia, Sudan, and Eritrea, this plant can grow up to 10 meters tall, forming either solitary specimens or large stands in dry savannahs and arid hillsides. Its thick green trunk becomes woody with age and supports many ascending branches that are ribbed and often slightly twisted, giving it a candelabra-like appearance. The stems are capable of storing water, allowing the plant to survive long droughts, and they also photosynthesize through their surface tissue. Small leaves appear on new growth at the tips of branches but drop off during the dry season, leaving the plant with its characteristic bare, angular form. Euphorbia abyssinica is highly adapted to hot, dry climates, making it a resilient ornamental choice in desert landscaping, though it should be handled with care as its milky latex sap is toxic and can cause skin irritation.
