The undoubted relationship that exists between science and technology is one source of confusion, and Sparks pointed out that, while science and technology overlap in an area that might be referred to as "applied science," there are a number of important differences between the two, even if these differences are not self-evident to the average member of the general public who, through neglect and repeated use of the phrase "science and technology," has become confused. It's hardly unexpected that the two can't be distinguished, given that, as Mayr phrased it, "practical useful criteria for identifying crisp tidy distinctions between science and technology do not exist."
