Food additives - list "E" mgr farm. Piotr Rykowskimgr. Farm. Piotr Rykowski In order to improve the taste, appearance and durability of food products, a number of chemical ingredients are added to them, called E additives. The "E" list has been established by the Scientific Committee of Food Technology, and their application conditions are defined by the EU Directives. The introduction of new food additives may only take place after documenting their harmlessness to the health of consumers and each time requires the opinion of the National Institute of Hygiene. In Poland, the use of these additives has been regulated by the Regulation of the Minister of Health of December 27, 2000. In Poland, nearly 300 additives have been approved for use, which we divide into 24 groups. The most important are: dyes, preservatives, antioxidants, acidifying substances, thickening and gelling preparations, sweeteners, flavors and fragrances. Additionally, we distinguish synthetic or natural substances. Contrary to popular belief, the term "substance identical to natural" is not synonymous with a natural additive. It only has a composition identical to that found in nature, but obtained by a method other than that of natural raw materials. The E ingredients are generally considered safe. Basically, we should trust the "E". In individual cases, when consumed frequently, they may negatively affect your health. Being aware that we suffer from ailments related to diseases allergic or digestive system diseases, let's read product labels. In Poland, it is obligatory to provide a list of E substances contained in it, which allows to avoid unpleasant consequences. When buying a tasty-looking bun, cold cuts, colorful drink or cake with a shelf life of several months, we are often unaware that this beneficial effect has been achieved thanks to the use of a whole range of various food additives. Within one year we consume on average nearly two kilograms of additives hidden in food products. It is worth knowing which of them may have a negative impact on our health or well-being.
